Job Description:

Summary:
This position performs functions in regards to laboratory tests and patient care in the Radiology Department. They perform functions associated with obtaining, receiving and processing of laboratory specimens on patients, as well as placing orders for each specific blood draw. This position is responsible for assessing patients for their exam, communicating with patients and providers as needed and accurately obtaining a peripheral IV catheter placement The incumbent of this position is also responsible for documenting patient care and ensuring that the results are properly filed. This position receives and responds to telephone inquiries about the laboratory processes and results. Other responsibilities include restocking the department supplies, operating multiple hospital computer systems, performing basic order entry and various support duties within the department. Performs other related functions as assigned.

Education:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and completion of standard one year medical laboratory assistant training course, phlebotomy course or equivalent training (e.g. CMA, EMT, Paramedic) or Associates degree or higher with a minimum of one year experience.

Experience:
One year of health care experience to include IV start, Customer Service, specimen processing and/or phlebotomy experience.
Must be trained and certified PCT, with experience in venipuncture.
The following may substitute for the above experience requirement
1. completion of one year of a two-year health care field program
2. graduation from a training program in an allied health care field which included phlebotomy, lab services, patient care/Customer Service or IV training

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Entry Level:
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Knowledge of communication skills to interact with personnel throughout the medical center.
Knowledge of customer service skills to interact with other medical personnel and patients.
Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
Ability to exhibit professional behavior and standards.
Ability to display attention to detail.
Ability to provide consistency with detailed documentation.
Self-motivator and teamwork skills.
Basic computer skills.

Required for Full Performance:
Knowledge of the filing systems used within the laboratory.
Ability to collect blood samples through capillary or venipuncture techniques
Ability to effectively place IV access.
Ability to follow laboratory procedures and maintain time, date and identity information on all specimens and reports.
Ability to use a computer terminal and navigate hospital computer systems and related hardware/software.
Ability to accurately process specimens for lab testing.
Ability to exhibit exemplary professional behavior and standards.
Ability to represent the department troubleshoots problems and does basic training of situational management.
